Black and White HDR Video Looks Like An Artist's Sketches Brought to Life [Video]

Of the three HDR videos we've seen recently, this is probably the most unusual. Several hundred photos were taken in black and white, and batch-processed together to create something you could almost see in an e-ink graphic novel. More »

A Tale of Two Root Exploits, and Why We Shouldn't Panic

There's no denying Linux is more secure than perpetually-patching Windows, but the past month or so has not provided an ideal demonstration. In August, we saw the arrival of a long-overdue fix for a kernel bug that was six years old; now, in the last week or so, it's been not one but two root exploits causing a fuss.

Concept Phone Both Amazing and Unbelievable

I really want to like Billy May’s ambitious concept for a browser-centric, open-web-standards-based phone
But it’s hopelessly unfettered from what’s actually buildable, usable or marketable.
Mozilla Labs has highlighted the phone, which May called Project Seabird, in its “Concept Series,” a showcase for community-created visions of the web’s future.
May, who is a talented industrial designer, has crammed [...]

IBM's Atomic Speed Gauge Could Mean Big Things for IT

IBM researchers can now look into what's happening in individual atoms in close to real time, according to a paper published Friday in Science. "We're interested in what happens at the very end of semiconductor and the IT industries," Andreas Heinrich, one of the IBM researchers involved in the project, told TechNewsWorld. "At that point, you're looking at single atoms, and we wanted to explore what happens at that scale."

A photo tour of the Mozilla offices in Mountain View, California

Last week, while I was in San Francisco for the IE9 beta thing, I was fortunate enough to also visit the Mozilla offices in Mountain View, California. I was mostly there to interview three big-wigs from the Firefox development team, but I also managed to take a few photos! This means that this week's Firefox Friday takes the form of a photo tour.

I have provided extensive commentary for each photo in the gallery, so take your time and enjoy the brand new, beautiful offices of Mozilla.

Note: After you click through to a photo, hit 'Hi res' at the top.

Add Send to Instapaper to your Google Chrome context menu

Instapaper is a great way to save all of those Web pages you encounter that you can't read right now. Their official bookmarklet is handy for adding items to your queue, but you have to click through to the page before you can utilize it. Wouldn't it be nice if you had the option of right-clicking a link to send a page to Instapaper instead?

If Google Chrome is your browser of choice, the Send to Instapaper extension is exactly what you're after. Rather than merely replacing a bookmarklet with a browser action button, this extension adds an entry to your context menu. Right-click a link that you'd like to check out later on, and it's added to your queue.

You'll need to be signed in to your Instapaper account first, as the extension doesn't store your username or password.

Lifeline Energy distributes solar powered radio / media players to the villages of Africa

Everybody know that the big money's in pain rays and various other wargadgets, so we really like it when someone at least tries to do a little good in the world. Lifeline Energy is a UK-based NGO that works to bring folks in emerging markets (mostly sub-Saharan Africa) items like solar-powered radios and lights, and it has just announced the launch of the Lifeplayer self-powered MP3 player and AM/FM/SW radio. This device features 64GB storage, microSD card slot, 3G connectivity, audio recording capabilities, and the ability to act as a sort of PA system -- according to the organization, groups of sixty can hear the thing clearly. It's powered either by a hand-crank or through its solar panel, and contains a USB port for charging devices such as cell phones. At present, Lifeline Energy is distributing over a thousand of these bad boys in Haiti and it's accepting donations to distribute them in Pakistan as well. Hit the source link to see how you can help. PR after the break.

Google to make Apps accounts more secure with two-factor authentication

Keeping your online accounts secure is a must, and Google will soon begin rolling out an improved authentication system to its Apps customers. Beginning with Google Apps Premier, Education, and Government users, you'll soon be able to utilize a smartphone-generated verification code as a second layer of account security.

It's a bit like the dedicated RSA SecurID fobs some enterprises use for VPN authentication. Sign in to your Google account via the usual login screen and you're then prompted to verify your account. Launch the Google Authenicator app on your smartphone and enter the code it displays to complete the sign-in process. Google Authenticator will be available for Android (image after the break), Blackberry, and iPhone users. Don't have a fancy smartphone? No problem -- Google can also call you or send an SMS message to provide you with a code.

Apps administrators can currently enable two-factor authentication in their control panels. Free apps domains will receive the feature in the coming months -- but here's hoping Google also rolls this out as an option in Gmail. My password is plenty strong, but why not add a little extra protection if it's available?

Pentax K-5 brings 16.2MP sensor, 'much faster' AF, and enhanced HDR to midrange DSLR party

Photokina is just about getting started over in Germany today, and Pentax has grabbed the opportunity to unveil its next K-series shooter nice and early. The new K-5 looks exactly as a leak earlier this month suggested, meaning it's an almost identical brother to the weather-resistant K-7. Of course, the big changes are taking place within, with a new 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor -- said to be equivalent in performance to the one in the 645D -- a 100 to 12800 ISO range, 7fps burst mode, much-improved 11-point autofocus, and an overhauled HDR mode. ISO can also be jacked up to 51200 with a custom function, but we wouldn't expect to get the finest imagery out of that. Other specs include a 3-inch, 921k-dot LCD around the back, 100 percent viewfinder coverage, 1080/25p video, and (sadly) only SDHC memory card compatibility -- there'll be no SDXC action for the big spenders among us.Gallery: Pentax K-5 DSLR press photosContinue reading Pentax K-5 brings 16.2MP sensor, 'much faster' AF, and enhanced HDR to midrange DSLR partyPentax K-5 brings 16.2MP sensor, 'much faster' AF, and enhanced HDR to midrange DSLR party originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 07:12:00 EDT. Caption contest: not feeling so Mega today

This year's Tokyo Game Show is naturally full of people in interesting costumes, but there was just... something about this Mega Man that caught our eye, making him stand out from the sea of similarly giant-headed mascots. Despite having a laser for an arm he just didn't look like he was having a particularly good day.

Josh T.: "Ladies, here's one you don't want to miss. Tall, handsome, shoots fireballs, ice, or electricity from his left arm, total sex machine. Bidding starts at $200."
Tim: "You'd be making this face too if you had a saggy diaper that leaks."
Darren: "P90x... what a rip-off."
Paul: "If I have to star in one more shameless reissue cash-in..."
Sean: "...but not as dour as the day he posed for the original Mega Man box art."
Vlad: "Stewie was far from happy. He'd specifically asked for an aquamarine supervillain outfit, not turquoise. Philistines!"
Chris: "When he gets like this, autograph sessions usually end in a fatality or two."
Richard Lai: "Have you seen the size of his cannon in the Mega Man movie? No wonder he's mad."Caption contest: not feeling so Mega today originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Sep 2010 11:11:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink   |   | Email this | Comments

New cloud computing algorithm successfully computes two-quadrillionth digit of pi

Filed under: Developer, Fun, Yahoo!Using a handy algorithm that splits a calculation into thousands of little intermediary processes, a researcher at Yahoo has used a cluster of 1,000 computers to calculate the 2,000,000,000,000,000th digit of pi. Not all two quadrillion digits -- just that one digit (which is a binary 0, if you're wondering).

The calculation was made possible by Hadoop, an open source implementation of Google's extensively-used MapReduce. Yahoo is now also presumably working on something that will make use of it (but considering Bing now powers Yahoo search, I'm not quite sure what they'd be using it for!)

As for whether the 2,000,000,000,000,000th digit of pi actually has a use, I'll leave as an exercise to you guys. Incidentally, earlier this year, pi was calculated to 2.7 trillion digits on a normal desktop PC!New cloud computing algorithm successfully computes two-quadrillionth digit of pi originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Intel Selling Scratch-Off ?Upgrade? Cards To Unlock Processor Power

If you bought a janky Compaq at Best Buy recently you may have been offered a $50 "upgrade" card that allows you to download software that will unlock threads and cache on the Pentium G6951 inside your PC. That's right: they are selling an upgrade that is actually a key to unlock performance that your PC already has. Internet firestorm in 3...2...1...

The chip in question has 1MB of cache and is fairly underpowered in the first place. As Engadget notes, the process of locking portions of a chip is fairly common but it usually happens because that area is defective on manufacture. This, however, is something completely different: you are paying an extra half a c-note to use the full power of your processor unhindered by what amounts to DRM.

Mozilla Labs Gaming launches, browser-based 'Open Web' games here we come

Filed under: Games, Mozilla, BrowsersLadies and gentlemen, I give you Mozilla Labs Gaming.

Now, don't make the same mistake I did: Mozilla isn't becoming a games studio. No, instead it will act as a catalyst -- an incubator -- for games built with 'Open Web' technologies. The Open Web is a new term that encompasses free, open-source tools that work across all platforms, and in theory across all next-generation Web browsers. The idea is that Web apps, like their open source, compiled cousins, can also be free. Rather than running to compiled cop-outs like Native Client, we should instead embrace JavaScript as the in-the-browser language of choice.

To kick things off, Mozilla Labs Gaming is holding its first ever international gaming contest -- Game On 2010 -- at the end of September. I don't have any more information about the competition format, or indeed if there are any prizes, but I'll see what I can find out!

Memorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backup

Taking a note from Clickfree, are we Memorex? The company that continually attempts to blow everyone away is back with its latest gust, Mirror for Photos. It's an odd name for an external hard drive, particularly when you realize that it functions nothing like bona fide photo backup drives that are designed to tether to your DSLR. At any rate, this here drive ships with software (PC and Mac compatible, in case you're curious) that instructs the HDD to backup to a host machine as soon as it's plugged in. Sounds great in theory, but we've always found it superbly annoying to try and halt those automated processes when you're just trying to drag and drop a critical meeting file while darting out the door. The unit itself measures in at 3- x 5- x 0.5-inches and gets all the power it needs from a USB connection; it's on sale today at Toys R Us (yeah, seriously) for $79.99 (320GB) / $99.99 (500GB) / $119.99 (640GB).Continue reading Memorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backupMemorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backup originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 07:32:00 EDT. Head on past the break to check it out in action, and go grab the app in the App Store right now -- it's free, but you'll have to shell out $80 for its desktop counterpart.

Test Self Improvements 2 - iPhone and iPad Replacements

As is known to all that the products of Apple are difficult to repair especially the iPhone, so, when we get these precious devices, we had better take good care of them and maybe get them armed from head to feet if we can to keep them from having problems, or else, some little problem or tinny replacements such as changing the battery would waste you a lot of time and efforts because you had to handle your iPhone or iPad back to the company to be deal with.
