If you want VLC for iPhone, iPad get it now before it?s pulled

VLC for iPhone Looks like VLC for iPhone and iPad is about to be pulled from the App Store because the Open Source Powers That Be don’t believe Apple’s iTunes App Store is compatible with the GPL components of the app. Basically, anything under the GPL has to be freely transferable to anyone without restriction. Since the App Store [...]

Panda Cloud Antivirus 1.3 adds Web and URL scanning, nixes the nag screens

Filed under:

Panda launched their lightweight Cloud Antivirus app just under a year ago, and it's already received a number of significant updates and improvements. Today, they're announcing the release of Cloud Antivirus 1.3 -- and a few more cool feature additions.

Probably the most significant addition is Cloud AV's ability to filter malicious URLs and websites -- regardless of which browser you're using. Using the Web filter does require installing a toolbar, but that's a trade-off some of your less security-minded friends and family might be willing to make.

Other changes include improvements to Cloud AV's behavioral and blocking rules, which Panda now updates on the fly. Cloud Antivirus also now updates all of its rules and even installs program updates without requiring user interaction. The icing on the v1.3 cake is Panda's decision to remove the nag screens.

Now, I'm not one to complain too much about a free antivirus program that pops up the odd banner advertising a company's paid products... but if Panda's willing to get rid of the nags in Cloud AV, that's just fine with me. You will still see a promotional pop-up for the pro version during the install process, but according to the official blog post that's all, folks.

#trickortreat: Show Off Your Halloween Costume On DailyBooth

Halloween is an exhibitionist's paradise, and nowhere do more (safe for work) exhibitionists congregate online than places like DailyBooth, a site which allows you to upload a photo of yourself, um daily. YC-funded DailyBooth has decided to get into the Halloween spirit this year (or is just really good at spotting opportunities for marketing itself) and is running a program that allows users to strut their Halloween stuff using the hashtag #trickortreat.

Unlocked GSM Palm Pre 2 to be 'available direct from HP,' Gorilla Glass on the front

We've been toying with a Palm Pre 2 for a few weeks now, but given that it's not "final hardware," we can't exactly make any firm judgments on the unit itself. Tim Pettitt, product manager for HP Palm, can. In speaking with MarkGuim.tv (and slyly handling a Verizon Pre 2), he not only confirmed that the company was relying on a layer of the famed Gorilla Glass to keep the front as scratch-resistant as possible, but also that the five megapixel camera is capable of capturing a shot every second. More importantly, however, he made clear that it wouldn't be just the developers nabbing an unlocked GSM Pre 2. According to Tim, that very handset will be "available direct from HP.com," though he stopped short of saying whether it would support T-Mobile's AWS 3G band. For AT&T loyalists, however, we're guessing this may be the best way to nab webOS on the network that's still rethinking possible.

[Thanks, Fuu]

Is this a Nikon Android tablet? Well, not quite, but it’s pretty damn close. The NF-300i is a 3D, 7.2-inch digital photo frame that runs the Android 2.1 OS. If it had a touch-screen, then it would be a tablet.

Lost AIM access in Gmail chat? Check your language settings

Filed under:

Gmail AIM ChatDid you know that you can chat with your AIM buddies using Gmail's built-in chat? It's actually been a feature since 2007, but at some stage it seems like Google hid it away. For some reason, if you're using any display language other than English (US), you can't use the AIM integration.

Fortunately, it's just a matter of hitting Settings in the top right of Gmail and changing the Gmail Display Language to English (US). You can then sign into AIM by clicking the little down arrow next to your Gmail chat status.

Of course, this doesn't help you if you want to use a non-American display language. It doesn't even work with British English! Crazy.

For Apple, AT&T Is The Company You Sleep With, Verizon Is The Company You Marry

Have you heard the news? The Verizon iPhone is coming. Today, Fortune has the 15th or so confirmation that the device will launch in early 2011. There's way too much smoke now for there not to be a fire. But even more interesting than that tidbit is Fortune's interview with Ivan Seidenberg, the CEO of Verizon. He wouldn't speak directly about a Verizon iPhone launch, but he still had plenty to say about the device, and Apple's CEO Steve Jobs. The most interesting thing he had to say was the last bit about the iPhone in the piece:
According to Seidenberg, Jobs told him during a December 2009 meeting, "Decisions you made [at Verizon] are decisions we would make at Apple."
That sounds like it's Jobs more or less saying that he respects Verizon because they stood up to him. They wouldn'tcompromiseon their vision.

Google Ventures Invest In HomeAway At $1.4 Billion Valuation

Google Ventures has invested in Austin, Texas based HomeAway, a vacation home rental service, at a $1.4 billion valuation, we've heard from a source. The New York Times first broke the story, but doesn't have details on valuation or amount invested. Our source says Google Ventures invested somewhere around $25 million in the company. Google Ventures bought stock directly from existing shareholders and the money isn't being injected into HomeAway. The valuation was set in the last round of financing, a massive $250 million raise in 2008.

Offsite for Google Chrome helps you discover related content

Full disclosure: AOL is DownloadSquad's parent company

AOL has been busy re-tooling itself ever since head honcho Tim Armstrong took the reigns, and one area that has received a lot of attention is social networking and content discovery. Lifestream is, perhaps, AOL's biggest social app, and now there's a second: Offsite.

Currently, Offsite is available as an extension for Google Chrome. Once installed, simply click the icon in your Omnibar (or the folded-over page corner in the top left) to load the Offsite overlay. The page you're currently viewing slides down and to the right, with relevant tweets taking the left column and related posts from other websites appears at the top (image after the break). A stream of trending topics is also shown, and Digg, Twitter, and AOL Mail sharing buttons are provided. Offsite also displays the page's "heat index," giving you a vague idea how popular it is right now.

Unlike AOL Lifestream for Chrome, Offsite loads in a flash. While it's handy in its current state, I'd like to see the sharing options tweaked. Facebook should be an option, and support for other email providers (and even the good old mailto:) would be a welcome improvement.

I'd also like to see this implemented as a bookmarklet so that users of other browsers can use Offsite -- which shouldn't be hard, given the nature of most Chrome extensions.
