Readability launches HTML5 Web app, eschews Apple App Store
The new Readability app is accessed by simply visiting www.readability.com on a mobile device, and it looks very similar to the native iOS app. This of course means that Readability is finally available for Android, too! It should work on the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and even the Nook. Readability, no doubt with a jaunty smile, says that it took its dev team just two weeks to write the new app.
The new Readability Web app has offline support (presumably through HTML5's localStorage), and you can easily share what you're reading via Facebook, Twitter or email. Because it's a Web app, every article that you read has a unique URL that you can easily share -- cool.
If you're a desktop user, there's a Readability browser add-on that does much the same thing.
Incidentally, iOS users, there may be some hope of a native app returning: Readability says it re-submitted its app to Apple a couple of weeks ago, and is still waiting for approval or rejection.

Developers, this milestone release means that the OWA Application Manifest spec is now stable -- so you can now safely begin building apps. There is also a stable JavaScript API that you can use to interact with the browser (installing, uninstalling, etc.) There's also the beginnings of a tutorial that you can use to get started.
For the end-users, you can actually try out some Open Web Apps now! You need to install an add-on first (Firefox / Chrome), and then simply head over Mozilla's Demo Apps.
Open Web Apps will be compatible with every platform and OS -- including Chrome! -- and they can be distributed in a variety of ways, too. Mozilla will undoubtedly run its own Web Store alongside AMO, but the Open Web App spec allows for developers to run their own store, or to simply distribute Web apps on their own, without the need for a store.
There's a video introducing Open Web Apps after the break.

PlayStation Suite coming to Tegra-powered Android devices
NVIDIA and Sony have announced that the latter will be bringing its PlayStation Suite software to Tegra-powered Android phones and tablets later this year. PlayStation Suite was announced at Sony's PlayStation Meeting 2011 earlier this year, and will bring classic PlayStation titles to Android devices along with new games created especially for the platform.
Sony also revealed that certain PlayStation 2 titles will also be making their way to the PlayStation Suite, in addition to PS1 titles, as announced back in January.
The arrival of PlayStation Suite on Tegra devices should clear the way for Sony's rumored S1 tablet, which is said to be due in late 2011 with a Tegra 2 chip and PlayStation support.

Aol To Journalists: You Be The Rock Star, We?ll Be Mark Chapman
"You be the rock star, we'll be your stage." - Aol billboard outside TCHQ
"Hey, what's going on? - Russell just got electrocuted." - Almost Famous
The re-invigoration of Aol continues apace today with the announcement by Tim Armstrong that 900 employees will be laid off before the afternoon is out. According to Wired, those canned include ?veteran journalists from AOL?s top news sites, including PoliticsDaily, DailyFinance and Walletpop?. Or as AOL?s SVP of news put it: ?I have just laid off dozens of the most talented journalists & product folks I know.? And, lest overpaid freelancers like me get too cocky, Tim had a nice fuck-you-very-much for us too. "Going forward, AOL will invest more heavily in our in-house editorial team and transition away from a reliance on freelance journalists," he wrote in an email leaked to Business Insider. Thank God I write books for a living, eh? To be fair, though, Armstrong's grand plan for making Aol the world's greatest content company isn't limited to laying off ?dozens of the most talented journalists and product folks?. According to a second leaked memo that's just landed in my inbox, other proposed measures to improve the bottom line include?Firefox 4 RC1 available to download, expected to be the final build
As far as the Firefox 4 development team are concerned, this is expected to be the final, release-ready build of Firefox 4; Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's Director of Firefox, says that this RC "represents the code we intend to ship as Firefox 4."
There are no significant changes between beta 12 and the RC. A lot of bugs have been squashed, and it looks like plug-ins are finally up to release-level stability.

Update: here's an HTTP download of the en-US build

Windows 8 leaked screenshots show Windows Live integration, taskbar tweaks
For starters, taskbar progress indicator support has been expanded to other built-in Windows functions, like hardware installation. Windows Live integration is evolving, too -- you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live ID and have your avatar set to your local Windows profile picture. This also hints at further integration with the cloud.
There's also a lot of noise being made about an eight-minute Windows 8 install process, though if you've loaded Windows 7 from a bootable SATA hard drive onto a system you've already seen pretty similar speeds (and that's what the tester used, not a DVD). The post also refers to a factory restore function, which would roll back your Windows 8 installation back to its day-one glory in about two minutes.
It's also clear that excited Windows 8 leakers aren't paying any attention to Microsoft's not-so-subtle wallpaper. We're not entirely sad about that.
