Readability launches HTML5 Web app, eschews Apple App Store

Readability HTML5 Web app
After having its recent iOS app pulled from the App Store by Apple, Readability has turned its attention to Open Web technologies and released an HTML5-powered Web app.

The new Readability app is accessed by simply visiting www.readability.com on a mobile device, and it looks very similar to the native iOS app. This of course means that Readability is finally available for Android, too! It should work on the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and even the Nook. Readability, no doubt with a jaunty smile, says that it took its dev team just two weeks to write the new app.

The new Readability Web app has offline support (presumably through HTML5's localStorage), and you can easily share what you're reading via Facebook, Twitter or email. Because it's a Web app, every article that you read has a unique URL that you can easily share -- cool.

If you're a desktop user, there's a Readability browser add-on that does much the same thing.

Incidentally, iOS users, there may be some hope of a native app returning: Readability says it re-submitted its app to Apple a couple of weeks ago, and is still waiting for approval or rejection.

Microsoft Could Muscle Back Into the Mobile Market

The turmoil surrounding Microsoft's efforts in the mobile market last year and the spectacularly rapid changes in this sector has raised concern about the company's hopes of ever catching up to the competition. Product miscues and a loss of high-profile personnel have contributed to the perception

Beautiful Foley Artists? Toolkit Makes You Want to Slap Something

The only time I ever think of foley artists is when I’m listening to a BBC Radio play and I hear somebody trudging up a gravel path. This always distracts me from the story as I imagine the invisible actor stepping up and down in a box of cat litter.
So thank goodness for Chiara Onida, [...]

The Japanese Quake Was So Powerful, It Bent the Tokyo Tower [Image Cache]

The Tokyo Tower is perhaps Japan's most iconic structure—a mammoth symbol of advanced modernity. And today's 9.0 magnitude quake rocked the 1,091 foot-tall steel tip completely crooked—what must be an unnerving reminder looming over Tokyo's residents. More »

Apple TV update reportedly causing screen flicker issues with HDMI to DVI adapters

We've seen reports of strange video behavior with Apple TVs before, and it looks like a new problem has now cropped up with the most recent update. According to a growing number of reports on the Apple support forums, those using an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect the device to their TV seem to have been hit with an annoying issue that causes their screen to flicker every few seconds. That's apparently happening with a wide range of TVs, and at least some are also reporting the same thing happening even if they aren't using an adapter. A few folks have apparently been able to fix things in the interim by simply pulling their HDMI cable and plugging it back in, but most are stuck with the annoying issue -- or worse, a downgraded 480p signal. Having some similar issues? Let us know in comments.

Mozilla releases first stable version of Open Web Apps

Mozilla's Open Web App Store
The open and free alternative to the Chrome-specific Web Store is now almost upon us! Developers, feast your eyes on the first milestone release of Mozilla's Web Application project.

Developers, this milestone release means that the OWA Application Manifest spec is now stable -- so you can now safely begin building apps. There is also a stable JavaScript API that you can use to interact with the browser (installing, uninstalling, etc.) There's also the beginnings of a tutorial that you can use to get started.

For the end-users, you can actually try out some Open Web Apps now! You need to install an add-on first (Firefox / Chrome), and then simply head over Mozilla's Demo Apps.

Open Web Apps will be compatible with every platform and OS -- including Chrome! -- and they can be distributed in a variety of ways, too. Mozilla will undoubtedly run its own Web Store alongside AMO, but the Open Web App spec allows for developers to run their own store, or to simply distribute Web apps on their own, without the need for a store.

There's a video introducing Open Web Apps after the break.

PlayStation Suite coming to Tegra-powered Android devices

 Tegra Zone

NVIDIA and Sony have announced that the latter will be bringing its PlayStation Suite software to Tegra-powered Android phones and tablets later this year. PlayStation Suite was announced at Sony's PlayStation Meeting 2011 earlier this year, and will bring classic PlayStation titles to Android devices along with new games created especially for the platform.

Sony also revealed that certain PlayStation 2 titles will also be making their way to the PlayStation Suite, in addition to PS1 titles, as announced back in January.

The arrival of PlayStation Suite on Tegra devices should clear the way for Sony's rumored S1 tablet, which is said to be due in late 2011 with a Tegra 2 chip and PlayStation support.

Aol To Journalists: You Be The Rock Star, We?ll Be Mark Chapman

"You be the rock star, we'll be your stage." - Aol billboard outside TCHQ

"Hey, what's going on? - Russell just got electrocuted." - Almost Famous

The re-invigoration of Aol continues apace today with the announcement by Tim Armstrong that 900 employees will be laid off before the afternoon is out. According to Wired, those canned include ?veteran journalists from AOL?s top news sites, including PoliticsDaily, DailyFinance and Walletpop?. Or as AOL?s SVP of news put it: ?I have just laid off dozens of the most talented journalists & product folks I know.? And, lest overpaid freelancers like me get too cocky, Tim had a nice fuck-you-very-much for us too. "Going forward, AOL will invest more heavily in our in-house editorial team and transition away from a reliance on freelance journalists," he wrote in an email leaked to Business Insider. Thank God I write books for a living, eh? To be fair, though, Armstrong's grand plan for making Aol the world's greatest content company isn't limited to laying off ?dozens of the most talented journalists and product folks?. According to a second leaked memo that's just landed in my inbox, other proposed measures to improve the bottom line include?

Firefox 4 RC1 available to download, expected to be the final build

Firefox 4 RC
Just a few moments ago, the Mozilla QA team signed off on the first Firefox 4 Release Candidate build. It is immediately available from the release FTP server, and from the Firefox Beta website later today.

As far as the Firefox 4 development team are concerned, this is expected to be the final, release-ready build of Firefox 4; Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's Director of Firefox, says that this RC "represents the code we intend to ship as Firefox 4."

There are no significant changes between beta 12 and the RC. A lot of bugs have been squashed, and it looks like plug-ins are finally up to release-level stability.

Download Firefox 4 RC1 via FTP (HTTP mirrors will be available shortly)

Update: here's an HTTP download of the en-US build

Windows 8 leaked screenshots show Windows Live integration, taskbar tweaks

Tangible Windows 8 details are beginning to emerge with some screenshots of the OS making the rounds on the Internet. Not much is revealed, but we do get a glimpse at a couple interesting changes.

For starters, taskbar progress indicator support has been expanded to other built-in Windows functions, like hardware installation. Windows Live integration is evolving, too -- you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live ID and have your avatar set to your local Windows profile picture. This also hints at further integration with the cloud.

There's also a lot of noise being made about an eight-minute Windows 8 install process, though if you've loaded Windows 7 from a bootable SATA hard drive onto a system you've already seen pretty similar speeds (and that's what the tester used, not a DVD). The post also refers to a factory restore function, which would roll back your Windows 8 installation back to its day-one glory in about two minutes.

It's also clear that excited Windows 8 leakers aren't paying any attention to Microsoft's not-so-subtle wallpaper. We're not entirely sad about that.

MIT Media Lab gets a multiplicitous new logo (video)

Logos can be surprisingly divisive things, so the MIT Media Lab has decided to cheat a little bit with its new identity: it won't have just one logo, it'll have 40,000. You heard / read / imagined that right, the new Media Lab logo will simply be the concept of three intersecting "spotlights," composed of three colors, straight lines, three black squares, and a few blending gradients. There's an algorithm behind it all, which is used to generate a unique logo for every new member of staff, meaning that although trademark claims may be a headache to enforce, originality will continue thriving in the Lab for a long time to come. Hit the source link to learn more or leap past the break for a nice video rundown.

The Future of Sony Is PlayStation [Blip]

A big hint as to how Sony sees the future of the company: It's combining the PlayStation business with all of its consumers electronics businesses—TVs and whatnot—and handing the whole hot mess to Kaz Hirai, who you probably know from running PlayStation. Which lines him up as Sir Howard Stringer's successor to the CEO slot. Even Sir Howard admits it to the WSJ: ""He is the leading candidate... The logic (of the choice) is inescapable." [WSJ] More »

Google Apps customers can now purchase additional storage on the cheap

google apps storage
A while back, Google started offering inexpensive storage upgrades for Google Docs storage. Now, users with a domain set up on Google Apps can purchase additional storage, too. The change means you can boost your disk space to 20GB for a paltry $5 per year, or a whopping 1TB for $256 per year (which works out to about $22 per month). That's a very reasonable price for additional cloud storage, and well worth it if you're a heavy Google Docs user.

The space is shared with Gmail as well, so you'll be boosting your mailbox capacity(Thanks for the correction, Nathan!). Hit the Google Enterprise blog for full details!

Richard Branson Would Love to Merge Virgin With Apple [Verbatim]

Speaking to TechRadar about Steve Jobs, Sir Richard Branson commented that "everything he does is real class and if he wants to rename his company Virgin Apple I'd be happy to merge!" Could we see Virgin Apple Galactic taking off in the future? Doubtful, but I bet it'd look a whole heap like 2001: A Space Odyssey. [TechRadar] More »
