Google's URL shortener, Goo.gl, gets a website, real-time analytics, API coming soon

Goo.gl, Google's URL shortener, has finally been given a website -- once there, you can shorten links and view real-time analytics of every short link you've ever created.

The site itself is plain, like most of Google's offerings, but the real-time analytics page is nothing short of fantastic. You can break traffic down by hours, days, weeks, months and all time, and see the total number of clicks, and from which referrers. At the bottom you can see the "visitor profiles," which shows you a breakdown of countries, browsers, and operating systems.

I'm not an avid user of URL shorteners (I hate the obfuscation), and I really don't know how each URL shortener compares, but I can say that Goo.gl is incredibly fast. Google also says the service is very stable (almost 100% uptime) and secure (all links are checked for malware, spam and phishing attacks).

As for Goo.gl's inclusion in Twitter clients and the like, an API is coming -- but Google doesn't say when.

Virgin Mobile rolls out Android-based Samsung Intercept: $249 prepaid

Not much of a surprise here, but Virgin Mobile has just officially announced that it's now offering the Samsung Intercept -- the carrier's first Android handset. Running a reasonable $249 prepaid -- and exclusive to Target for the next few weeks -- the phone boasts a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, a sliding QWERTY keypad, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and all the basic Android amenities you'd expect (it's shipping with Android 2.1). Of course, that $249 is quite a bit higher than the $99 it demands on-contract on Sprint, but Virgin promises you'll save 25 percent or more in the long-run if you pair the phone with one of its prepaid plans, which run between $25 and $60 per month. CineXPlayer adds iPhone and iPod touch to its Xvid party list, still won't cook your popcorn

Remember how NXP Software surprised the world with its CineXPlayer iPad app just two months ago? Well, the gang is back to give our iPhone (3GS and 4) and iPod touch (3rd and 4th gen) the same dose of Xvid goodness. Like its older sibling, this $1.99 CineXPlayer utilizes the same method for easily sideloading your AVI files via iTunes (under the iDevice's Apps tab), and you'll also find a familiar-looking interface topped with an extra rotation-lock button -- much more useful than iOS' native lock that only lets you watch in portrait mode. Alas, video files other than of Xvid and DivX nature aren't currently supported, but hopefully it won't be long before the VLC iPad app gets a smaller variant as well.

Samsung Intercept available today, online later this month

Virgin Mobile officially announced the Samsung Intercept's pricing and availability today. After small updates through Facebook and our showing it to your first at Target, we finally know that the Intercept is officially available beginning today at Target stores across the country. The Intercept will retail at $249.99 -- just like we saw earlier. The phone will make its way into other major retailers by mid-October. Full press release after the break.

Microsoft Security Essentials celebrates one year of destroying malware

It's a bit hard to believe, but it's only been one short year since Microsoft introduced Security Essentials to the world. So, how do you celebrate the first birthday of an anti-malware app that is loved by tens of millions of users? With a cake and a couple of blog posts, of course!

Over at the Windows Team Blog, they're focused on numbers -- here are few key ones:

• 30 million users in 74 countries
• 366 million threats removed
• Three certifications (ICSA, West Coast Labs, and AV-Test)

They're also reminding readers of the licensing change, which takes place in October: Security Essentials will be free to use in small business and office settings of up to 10 computers. Also announced: HP is shipping MSE pre-installed on their new Envy laptops.

The next version of Microsoft Security Essentials is currently in beta testing, and it should arrive some time in early 2011.
