Unicorns, the Nexus Two, Continuum and HTC Merge [From the forums]

Where do we talk about gnomes, unicorns and Android phones that might or might not exist? In the Android Forums at Android Central, of course! Here's what's going on as we head into the weekend:

• The Nexus Two/Nexus S if on everybody's mind this week, and everybody has their own source on what it is, and when it's coming out. Discuss the Nexus Two rumors here.

HTC Trophy review

Why yes, yes it is another Windows Phone 7 device review. Not that we're complaining. It's not everyday that a new mobile operating system this polished arrives at our doorstep. Having already gone in depth with Microsoft's entirely new OS and half dozen or so other WP7 devices, it's now time to dive deep into the life and times of the HTC Trophy (codenamed, Spark). And it's about time. We first saw the words "HTC" and "Trophy" on the same page in a roadmap leak all the way back in 2009. Several of the leaked handsets eventually launched -- but not the 3-inch portrait QWERTY Trophy running Windows Mobile 6.5. Perhaps that original design was scrapped along with WinMo's relevancy to the consumer smartphone market. We don't know and we may never know. What we can tell you is what it's like to live with a production HTC Trophy for a week -- an average speced touchscreen slate offering anything but a middle-of-the-road experience.

iPhone locked for early 2011 on Verizon, says Fortune

Though Verizon famously turned down the original iPhone before Apple ultimately signed a deal with AT&T, the company's outspoken CEO -- Ivan Seidenberg -- has been very careful over the past couple years to note that he'd love to eventually have an iPhone in his lineup. With Verizon Wireless boss Lowell McAdam tapped to take over the top job next year, what'd be a better swan song for Seidenberg than to finally pull it off? Fortune's new profile of the longstanding chief exec and elder statesman is reporting in very matter-of-fact terms that a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 will be a reality on Verizon in "early 2011," lining up with most of the rumors the interwebs has been generating over the past few months.

The piece details the phone as the culmination of literally years of careful discussions between Seidenberg, McAdams, and Steve Jobs; Verizon's guys claim that Jobs acknowledged in late 2007 that the two companies had "missed something" by failing to partner up. The first visible fruit of those talks is the MiFi-bundled iPad that just launched, but that's clearly a minor stepping stone on the way to an actual handset. Fortune reports that Jobs has voiced his concerns over CDMA in the past and the fact that it doesn't work in nearly as many countries as GSM does, but the story goes on to say that the first model on Verizon's shelves "probably" won't be dual-mode and presumably won't have compatibility with the company's shiny new LTE network, either. If true, that'll make for an interesting battle for the spotlight in the first few months of 2011 as an EV-DO iPhone wages war with a number of LTE phones -- some of which look downright gorgeous -- and might put Verizon in the awkward position of having to heavily push two almost diametrically opposed handset and platform initiatives. Furthermore, it's hard to deny that a Verizon iPhone would stress the carrier's network in ways it's never been stressed before; they may be prepared for it, but there's no way of knowing until it all goes down and they get a sense for uptake and conquests from AT&T. Translation: McAdam looks to have a busy 2011 ahead of him as he transitions into the new office.

Prey tracks stolen Windows, Mac or Linux laptops, or Android smartphones, for free

Looking for an inexpensive -- or better yet, free -- way to track your laptop or Android smartphone in the event it gets stolen? Check out Prey, an open source project that offers multi-OS tracking, reporting -- and countermeasures!

Just download the Prey client software, install, and register an account -- you'll need one in order to be able to access the service's Web-based control panel. Prey can collect a ton of valuable information from your device should it go missing, like:

• its MAC address and current IP
• nearby wireless access points
• session activity, including screenshots of the active desktop
• detailed hardware information, including serial number(s)
• geolocation data via GPS or Wi-Fi
• a webcam (or front-facing camera) image

The control panel also allows you to perform a handful of remote actions such as locking the device, sounding an alarm for 30 seconds, giving the thief a scary verbal (and wallpaper-based) warning, and even delete browser cookies, saved passwords and hide your emails. Prey's alarm doesn't disappoint, either -- it's a police siren and is highly irritating.

While it's not a totally stealth install like some paid theft recovery software, Prey is sneaky enough to get the job done. It installs itself as a service and doesn't include an easily-to-locate uninstaller. On the few occasions I've had to assist the RCMP with stolen laptop recovery, the thief has never had the presence of mind to take any steps that would sidestep Prey.

Prey is totally free for up to three devices, and there are premium plans offered for businesses (or gadget-loving families) who need to track additional hardware.
