Dell Venue Pro gets FCC certification -- with AT&T 3G

If we had a dollar for every time we heard someone lament, "if only the Venue Pro worked on AT&T," we'd have... like, 30 dollars. At least! It's on that note that we bring news to you this evening of a new Venue Pro variant in the FCC's archives sporting WCDMA Band II and V support, which is exactly what you'd need to get fancy on the 3G networks of AT&T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus. Now, we do want to caution everyone that Dell has a track record of getting FCC approval for devices that never hit the market -- take the AWS-capable Streak, for instance -- but this is an interesting development to say the least. 'Course, at this point, we'll be happy getting even one kind of Venue Pro shipped in volume, much less two -- but it's something to keep an eye out for.

Google Maps 5 (With 3D Buildings And Offline Routing!) Now Available For Android

Remember that awesome new build of Google Maps for Android that Google started teasing us with last week? It's now available, and it's fantastic. The new build, creatively dubbed "Google Maps 5", packs at least three big features: 3D building rendering (allowing you to tilt and rotate around a map to get a considerably more accurate idea of what things look like), Dynamic Vector-based map drawing, and Offline reliability. While that first feature is perhaps the most flashy, the last two are what really seal the deal. If it weren't already, Maps for Android is now quite certainly the best mapping experience in mobile.

AppJump Launcher is a handy, drop-down launcher for your Google Chrome Apps

The Chrome Web Store is finally here, and many of you probably have a handful of apps installed -- if for no other reason than a little eye candy on your new tab page. If you'd prefer a way to launch your apps that offers a bit more convenience and customization, check out the AppJump Launcher extension.

In addition to adding a handy drop-down panel from which you can launch your Chrome Apps, AppJump also allows you to create groups, which lets you categorize things for quick drill-down access -- which will be very useful once you've accumulated a few dozen apps.

One feature which is missing from AppJump is drag-to-reorder (which is also missing from the Chrome new tab page). I'd love to be able to move my apps around and sort them however I choose, but for right now you're stuck with whatever layout AppJump displays.

Gesture-controlled robot arm enables civilization's most meta high five

This video, criminally, doesn't actually show any high fives, but we're sure the students at the University of Tsukuba have sustained endless LOLs over the past few months, pushing their gesture-driven robot arm system to the limits of human-robot high five interaction. The system itself is relatively simple: it uses two cameras to track a hand's movements, including specific finger gestures, which are then processed and translated into robotic movement in real time. The end result is basically the world's most elaborate claw machine game, as demonstrated above.

FBI Poked Spy Hole in OpenBSD, Says Former Contractor

Allegations surfaced Tuesday that the FBI put backdoors into the network stack of OpenBSD. They were made by a Gregory Perry, who claimed to be chief technology officer of NETSEC, a government contractor. AOL Acquires Content Marketing Platform Startup Pictela

AOL has picked up Pictela, an NYC-based startup that offers a platform capable of injecting branded rich media such as video, photos and apps directly into various online advertising and social media. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed (update: WSJ says about $20 million). AOL hopes the purchase will bring scale to its suite of advertising tools for advertisers, agencies and publishers, including the company?s new Project Devil display advertising format - which it intends to roll out across all AOL Media sites by March 31, 2011.

ChevronWP7, the Windows Phone 7 unlocking tool, has been axed

In a rather unprecedented (but not unexpected) show of graciousness, the developers of ChevronWP7 have decided to cease all development of the tool. It has also been pulled from the site -- you can no longer download it.

The developers talked with Brandon Watson, Director of Windows Phone 7 Developer Experience, and emerged with the conclusion that Microsoft is amenable to official homebrew development on Windows Phone 7. ChevronWP7 was axed as a show of good faith -- to "fast-track discussions" as the ChevronWP7 developers put it.

While it's nice to think that ChevronWP7 single-handedly spurred Microsoft into action, I think it's more of a well-timed coincidence. Microsoft surely knows of the strength and loyalty of homebrew communities, and it would be silly to ignore a hotbed of developers that one day, if given the chance, might make a fortune on the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

I'd love to know if Microsoft actually leveled its legal might at the developers of ChevronWP7, or whether this was a purely amicable resolution. I've reached out to Long Zheng, one of the developers, for a comment; I'll let you know what he says. (Update: he says the conversation with Microsoft was "in good faith" -- presumably that means there was no legal muscle.)

Microsoft rolls out free Office Web Apps to 15 additional countries

Microsoft began previewing Office Web Apps (OWA) back in September of 2009, and today the Office team has announced expanded availability of the free-to-use OWA. Originally available in just 11 countries, the total number has been more than doubled and is now open to users in China, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan.

All you need is a Windows Live account, and it's well worth signing up for one if you haven't already. Office Web Apps are fully compatible with their desktop counterparts, and while they're somewhat feature-limited you can use them in good conscience without having to pay a single cent.

Every morning, as Lee empties the mail bag onto my desk, we pore through cries of help that range from the utterly banal -- "how do i install iTuns???" -- through to truly taxing technical teasers. The fact is, though, no matter how simple the question is, how blatant the answer might be -- "google it!" -- we try to answer them. After all, a problem is a problem. If something prevents you from using your computer, it doesn't matter how complex it is to fix, you just want it to work!

It's been a long time since our last Ask DLS, but hopefully this is the beginning of a regular, recurring feature. You may also see a return of Tell DLS -- but for the time being, if you have any technical questions, use our feedback form.
